Rimmel Waterproof Gel Eyeliner

Rimmel Waterproof Gel Eyeliner: Boots/Superdrug (£6.49)*

Personally, Im not one to talk negatively about a product, If I think somethings bad I simply won't give it the coverage on my blog rather than trash an item completely. Then again I do think there are those times when a product disappoints you so much you just have to say something about it because it was just that bad. So hey! Here goes… the Rimmel Waterproof Gel eyeliner is possibly the worst gel liner I've ever used.

Its greasy, slick and takes what feels like forever to dry down. To me a good gel eyeliner should be a true black, good staying power, pigmented and quick drying with either a shiney or a matte finish. At first the application was so patchy I didnt actually think I'd be able to get a constant line along my upper lashes. I ended up having to dot it on rather than a swipe. Once applied the Rimmel Gel liner felt tacky so I left it for a few seconds to dry down before opening my eye. As soon as I opened my eye it transferred onto my lid and it looked terrible and ruined my eye makeup. To test it I decided to wait to see how long it would take to actually dry and I was looking at 10+ minutes and it was still a touch too wet. It came straight off and I used a different liner while the product headed straight for the bin. Considering I do my makeup in about 10 minutes normally waiting that long for my liner was a complete no-no.

The thing is the gel liner itself looks like it would be lovely pigmented black colour, In the pot and swatched it looks like it will be a shiny true black with a slightly shiny finish. But this isn't how it is, There is something about the formula that just isn't right. The product feels like a gel, where as I think most "gel liners" have a more creamy constancy than a gel one. Paired with the brush that is concealed in the lid of the product, I feel like it just sticks to the end of the brush rather than actually apply to the skin. I had a inkling the brush is applying way too much product hence why it's taking forever to dry, but then I tried using a normal liner brush (Sigma E05) but it still didn't apply as I expected it to. The brush that comes with the product is really stiff and pointy, and I also thing little to short to actually use comfortably. I personally think if Rimmel want to include a brush with their gel liner that it should apply the product well.

Overall I just think its a naff product and to be honest if I'd bought this product I'd have been highly disappointed. I can't believe they actually released something like this as its by far the worst drugstore eyeliner I've ever tried. I have no idea if it is actually waterproof as I couldn't even wear it long enough to test it out! As far as drugstore gel eyeliners I'd highly reccomend the Fashionista Gel Eyeliner which is actually one of my favourite liners I've ever tried.

I don't normally leave open ended questions on my blog posts but has anyone actually tried this? I'd love to know other peoples thoughts on it!

  1. I was kindly given this by a company the other day and I haven't tried it yet! I thought the concept of if was pretty cool because of the pot and brush, etc. I'm not really an eyeliner person anyway, but I will try it out today and see how it goes! Thanks of the review. :)

  2. I brought this the other week when boots had 3 for 2 on - it's absolutely pants!
I completely agree with it being greasy and patchy, it's staying power is practically non-existent as well! Not a fan!

  4. I was tempted by this 'cause I've never tried a gel eyeliner before, but now I'm a bit sceptical! Not to say that's a bad thing in my opinion at least, ha. So pleased to see a completely honest review of a product, this is why I trust what you say about things!! haha xo

  5. I saw an equally as bad review for it and was surprised as I'd swatched it and it seems good! But alas I won't be investing any time soon, yet to see a good review!

  6. I bought this as my first gel eye liner (in Boots 3 for 2) so I have nothing to compare it to. I am quite pleased with the colour of it, and found it easy to apply, but like you have found it does take ages to dry and has a tendency to transfer to the the top of my eye lids if I don't wait long enough! I think I will try another brand next time! xo

  7. Such a shame it takes so long to dry. I really recommend the Maybelline gel eye liner, so easy to use and dries quickly, plus the brush is amazing ! xx

  8. I agree with everything you said. I did purchase it and am soooooo disappointed!! Im used to using gel eye liner, mainly Bobbi Brown but just hated this. As you say, it doesn't dry for ages, it's patchy and smudges. It also made my eyes sting and was a bugger to get off too. Overall, a complete waste of money :( X

  9. I think negative reviews are useful if not more useful than positive reviews!
I will now know not to buy this product, thanks :)

  12. Good thing I didn't buy this really, would of been a complete waste of time and money. I recommend the LO'real Gel eyeliner, It's real easy to apply.

  13. I agree this eyeliner is rubbish! its all about the novelty factor of the built in brush rather than the product.
The loreal gel eyeliner is one of the best ones out there, i think im on my 3rd pot.

  15. I've never been particularly impressed by Rimmel products. I think it was a mascara that was the final straw for me. But thanks for the review to still stay away, lol!

  16. I received it as a sample a couple of weeks ago and it was terrible! It is impossible to apply as you can't draw a full line (it makes strokes, awful!). I love the idea of the brush in the cap but seriously, everything about this product is bad!
I am glad I was given this for free because otherwise, I'll be crying. Rimmel is more expensive here is Belgium, and for the same price, I'll go for the Maybelline gel liner which are good dupes for Bobbi Brown!

  17. I thought I saw this in the shops and was tempted to buy it... but after reading this review. Wow. I already have oily lids, I don't need something that takes forever to dry applied to my lids thank you. Thanks for the review, its much appreciated !

  18. i had high hopes for this since its rimmel...even the essence gel liner is way better since its such a rich black and dries quick

  19. I understand what you say about not trashing a product but an honest negative review stops people from wasting their money. I'm always on the look out for a new gel eyeliner to buy so if you hadn't said how bad this was I probably would have bought it! So thanks :) X

    1. i think theres a difference thought between a crap product and one that doesn't live up to expectation, for example id say cheaper products don't live up to my expectations alot but that doesn't make them a bad product overall just because i have high expectations.

  21. I bought this a few weeks ago and totally agree with you. It transferred onto my eyelids, even after sitting, waiting for it to dry for god knows how long. It rubbed off my eyes too easily and was patchy.
I haven't used it since the first disastrous experience.

  22. Thanks for this Lily - it's really good to hear an honest opinion on a bad product. A non-transferable eye-liner is my holy grail!

  23. I'm using this at the moment, some days it works, some it doesn't. It took a while to get used to the brush and gradually found the best ways to apply it. Though i di get annoyed the amount of times it sticks to my lids, or if i'm in a hot environment it literally smudges everywhere! (NOT attractive!). Waterproof wise it's really good and has a strong staying power. However as soon as i can afford to, i'm going to go back to using the Models Own liquid eyeliner!

  24. Bought this as a slightly cheaper alternative to Maybelline's version (after it went missing into my boyfriend's little sister's room). Definitely does not compare favourably against the Maybelline, but I didn't find it as bad as you seem to have! X

  25. agreed, it was terrible.

  26. I'm using this eyeliner at the moment and it's the first gel one I've ever had. It's terrible. The brush is terrible and when I apply it, it leaves like a line were the brush has makes strokes in the liner. Is the loreal carbon gloss liner any better?

  27. I bought this, used it once and never again. I use L'oreal Studio Gel Liner, and i've never had a problem with it. I used this, and i used it as i would the L'oreal, and it went all over my eyelids.

  28. I agree, the eye-liner has no staying power at all! I thought the brush was fine and I could do a full swipe but in certain areas I had to go over as it was slightly patchy. the only remedy I could find was to instantly put powder on top to dry it - this prevented it from transferring onto my lids however it dulled the colour down. You can't win!!

  29. I completly agree - bought this a few months ago, too and I used it once and threw it straight in the bin.
