my eyebrow story

from slugs to tadpoles and back again

I know my eyebrows are either a hot or a boring topic, some people love them others despise them. Either way I wanted to share my eyebrow story as lame as that sounds. I've always had very thick eyebrows and for as long as I can remember I've always struggled with them being the shape I really wanted. I started plucking them around 13-14 to keep the monobrow at bay and since then they seem to have got progressively smaller. The problem with my brows is mainly the fact they are too far apart and because I was so paranoid about monobrows I never could leave it to grow back. I've never plucked them all out or anything crazy like that thankfully!

I didn't start filling my brows in until around Jaunary 2011, before I didn't even know it was a thing and since then I never really looked back. I started off using pencil, and then soon went on to powder to give it a softer finish. By now I was getting my brows threaded on a pretty regular basis, probably around every there weeks or so at one of those random shopping centre stands. While I think it depends where you go, on reflection I was never really happy with the results. I remember once they took so much of the front of one of my brows to make it look less sparse I was left with a huge gap between my brows and therefore again they had to take even more off resulting in them being too far apart.

It was actually the Glossy Box birthday party that made me realise I need to grow my eyebrows back. A disastrous dodgy eyebrow threading session left me pretty much brow less. Enough was enough. They we're ridiculously thin, looked like tadpoles and were just way to far apart. They looked bloody terrible and I made the conscious decision that I needed to let them grow.

I went on holiday for a long time back in June/July so I decided to leave them. Yup, I didn't touch my brows for weeks. I don't know how I coped, I guess because I was away and I wasn't doing much in the summer I was able to get away with it. Here is a hideous photo of how they looked! On my return to London I booked an eyebrow shape with my eyebrow lady Feroza (review here) and she shaped them back into a natural full shape. I decided I wanted to get away from the high arched look I'd normally opt for and go for something softer and more natural. I wanted to keep them rounded rather than too arched and keep as much of the natural texture as I can.

Currently they are at the point where I don't even have to fill them in anymore as they look fine without anything in as long as I keep up maintaining the shape. I do sometimes fill them when I feel like my face needs it, but most of the time I just brush through them with a mascara comb. It took me about five weeks of simply leaving them to get the front part growing back properly, and then probably another two or three months to get them to the point they are now. I also tried to using castor oil on them as well as Rapid Brow when I remembered, but I do think the trick was just to simply leave them.

I'm really happy with how they are, even though Im tempted to take them down a hair or two thinner just for a little less obvious-ness now my hair is lighter. Since going blonde I've been asked if I'd change the colour of my brows, and I don't think I would. I like the whole Cara Delevinge thing, and I think for now I'm going to rock it. I do want to go blonder in the future and changing my eyebrow colour might need to happen then, but for now they'll do!

Anyway I know this the the most ridiculously long post I've probably written, but I just want to say you can change the shape of you're eyebrows and it can dramatically change how you look. Honestly, I know that growing out your eyebrows is possibly one of the hardest things to do in the world but I just want to prove you can do it and change your brows in a short ammount of time if you just LEAVE them. I think you just need to note how different I look with those ridiculously thin brows compared to how my brows look now. My face looks completely different and it looks a whole lot softer!

  2. They definitely look the best now! I wish I could grow mine thick but not happening due to over plucking and being sparse in the first place. Def brow envy over here ;)

  5. Growing out your eyebrows no doubt is the hardest beauty related thing I've ever done! It took AGES... And I didn't even want a drastic change.

  10. Great topic post..
I think many people would be guilty of the 'over plucked' look.
I really relate to your whole 'brow story', over plucking, wanting the arched look to then going more natural..
I'm still on the search for my 'perfect shape' and perfect way of adding to them products wise.
Think your eyebrows are fine as they are. Natural. :)

  11. Your eyebrows look the best now and at august 2012 I reckon! I have very thick brows almost as thick as yours and I love to rock them! I also have the very far apart eyebrow/eye problem, my nickname is pug as their eyes are so far apart! You have to work with it rather than do what I did at 13 and pluck way too much - I'm much happier with them being thick and shaped right for my face shape rather than thin and giving out the "holy shit I look surprised all the time" look so if I could give my 13 year old self some quick advice it would be to only pluck where you need it.. Also, you remind me so much of Cara Delevinge, could be twins, and that's a compliment. Anyway loving the post! xx

  13. Hiya, Thank you for sharing your story with us. I remember a few years ago I hated my eyebrows and seeing some of my old pictures once upon a time they were extremely thin I have no idea how did I managed to do that on my own lol. Nowadays I've been letting them grow. I've been to a couple of beauty salons but I haven't found the ONE yet I always leave with a "meh" smile on my face.

  17. I think they're perfect just the way they are now, and I actually love a dark brow with lighter hair, I think it has great impact. And honestly, I think I like them better without being filled in now. So they're a little sparse at the thick end, I think it adds personality and character. I wouldn't touch 'em if I were you! Gorgeous!

  21. I have the opposite problem, my natural brows are really sparse so are hard to shape, wish I had brows like yours, I've noticed a lot of thicker natural brows in beauty ads at the moment x

  22. I used to pluck my brows into tiny, overly arched tadpoles too! So glad I stopped and let them grow back in while I still could. Love the bottom picture, you really suit pale skin xxx

  25. Thank you so much for this post! My eyebrows a awful at the moment, kept over plucking and now it's too much effort filling them in the mornings. I think I need to let them grow, I just never know when to stop with the bloody tweezers! haha. Love your blog by the way. Interesting to know that you studied graphic design for a while. My beauty obsession is fuelled by the fact that I buy so much stuff because I love the packaging, graphic design has ruined my life. ha!
