breakout busting trio

breakout busting trio review swatch photo

origins out of trouble mask
clarins gentle exfoliating lotion*
la roche posay effaclar duo

So if you've seen any of my GRWM videos recently you might have spotted (puny) that I've been sporting a rather nasty crop of angry red friends recently. I usually only breakout on my chin during that time of the month. But for reasons still unknown to me,  I've had congested skin all over my cheeks, forehead and lower jaw. I've gone over a few theories on what may have caused my skin to breakout so badly ranging from a silicone intolerance, an essential oils reaction to poor diet and even considered it could be my kitten making my skin react.

While I still haven't gotten down to the bottom of the breakout, this while spotty episode this has been really getting me down. I try not to let my skin woes get the better of me because it could be a whole lot worse than it is. Yet this is probably one of my worst skincare periods of my life, the breakout has been sore, cystic, angry looking and feels like it's been going on for at least two months now. As soon as one crop heals another angry bump pops up. While I've never claimed to have perfect skin, I have the odd spot like everyone else. Good coverage foundation helps me cope! But it's easy to feel insecure when you're surrounded by beautiful bloggers (and celebs) with perfect skin all the time. While my skin is still on the mend, here are three products I religiously use whenever my skin is a bit dodgy.

First up is the Origins Out of Trouble Mask. This mask is sulfur, zinc oxide and camphor based, but it also contains salicylic acid. Salicylic Acid is one of my skin's favourite ingredients when it comes to calming spots, reducing redness and size. I found the camphor smell put me off initially, but I've grown to like it. I think it's very medicinal scent which reminds me a bit of toothpaste or hostpials. The mask feels like it's working and drying out the skin in just 10 minutes. I use the mask an all over face mask as well as a targeted spot treatment. To do this I use a clean cotton bud and dab product on angry looking areas and leave it overnight. A few of these overnight applications on the most stubborn of spots will make a huge difference. This works a brilliantly on those painful under the skin bumps too.

When you're skins broken out it's important to exfoliate, but traditional exfoliators might be a little harsh on the skin so opt for a chemical one. While the name sounds scary, they work at gently breaking the dead skin cells away and regenerating new ones without being abrasive. I personally really like the Clarins Gentle Exfoliating Toner as it's really gentle on the skin and suitable for everyday use. I do like Alpha H Liquid Gold but it's way too potent for more than 2-3 times a week for me. All I do sweep a cotton pad soaked in the toner all over before applying any creams or night treatments. It feels a bit tingly at first, although I like to think that's the product actually working!

Finally, this is a no brainer if you've read my blog for the last couple of months and that's the La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo. The ultimate in skincare item for my breakout prone skin. It unclogs pores, mattify the skin, keeps oiliness at bay and helps even out the overall appearance of my skin. I literally have never used anything I like as much as this when my skin is bad. I stopped using it for the longest time, which I should really give myself a slap on the wrist for. I actually forgot all about this product so when I decided to repurchase and add it back into my routine, my skin has improved tenfold. I don't typically elevate items to the holy grail status, but this is definitely one of my all time favourite skincare products and if I could use one for the rest of my life it would be this. My skin just simply adores it.

Like I said while my breakout hasn't gone it has got a lot better since I started getting strict with my spot fighting skincare routine. I've also really cut back on dairy as I've been so slack at monitoring it as I know that another of the main reasons my skin breaks out. I also think my skin is so sensitive so many things break it out that Im very wary of trying new products. I think from now on when it comes to skincare and bases Im going to stick to what I know works for me!
What are your favourite breakout products?

  2. I've never tried any of these but the La Roche Posay has been on my wishlist for a while. I don't usually have bad breakouts but they do bother me when I have them, and it seems like this stuff works wonders for everyone. Definitely a must try for me.

  3. I feel your pain! I used to have more or less perfect skin apart from the odd spot. Then I decided to try the contraceptive injection and ive had the worst near acne since! I steam my face before applying any treatments and that seema to help ALOT! As much as I hate doing it, I have at least one no make up day in the week.
I'll have to give the origins a go.
Ive mainly been using tea tree and which hazel which soothes my skin when it's extra angry!
Hopefully you can sort your spot woes out soon!

  7. So glad it's payday when you've posted this... my skin has never been great but just when I thought it was clearing up, bam, I'm like a dot-to-dot puzzle! Not sure about the exfoliator but I'll definitely be trying the other two!

  9. So funny, I considered it could be my kitten before in a moment of madness when trying to figure out why I'm plagued by breakouts. I really couldn't recommend the Cane & Austin Acne Treatment Pads and S5 Skincare purity serum for helping - they have saved my skin. I HATE leaving and plugging my blog link in comments but I have just reviewed them both recently and I think they would really help! it's www.jennypurr.co.uk and I honestly think the cane & austin pads would help so much, they really have with me! xxx

  13. I am having the exact same problem at the moment, and have been for about four months now- clusters of spots all over my forehead with the occasional cystic one thrown in too for good measure- cheers skin gods! Honestly nothing really worked, and I tried everything, not eating certain things, upping the water intake, not using certain skincare products, not using any skincare products, masks, home remedies, the whole lot. I just assume it's something hormonal so I can't really battle it. I went shopping two weeks ago and whilst trying on something in the Topshop changing rooms (awful idea, terrible lighting) I just caught sight of myself in the mirror and I just looked absolutely horrendous, it put me in such an awful mood, it seems to be clearing up slightly now but I'm just feeling pretty desperate. Will give the Origins mask a whirl, xxx
