throwback thursday: beauty blogger edition

throwback thursday: beauty blogger edition review swatch photo
Gosh Lipstick in Darling, GOSH Holographic Nail Polish, Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, Eyeko, Chanel Bronze Universal

I've been reading blogs for probably about 6 years now, and I've seen a lot of beauty products come and go. I'm a huge consumer of all things blogging and beauty. I'm very much influenced by the people around me and what my favourite bloggers talk about. I typically normally only buy a product when another blogger has talked about it or reviewed it first. It's very rare I buy blind these days!

Hyped up products tend to stick out in my mind as because during a period of time EVERYONE was talking about it. Usually over time the hype dies down, and products got replaced and ultimately forgotten about. Obviously Depending on how long you've been blogging or what blogs you read you might have a completely different idea of what was and wasn't hyped in the past.

I thought it would be fun to start a tag called Throwback Thursday: Beauty Blogger Edition. A tag in which you pick 5 products (or brands) that were previously hyped in the blog world give your thoughts on them and talk about if you still use them. Without further ado here are my picks for products that blogs forgot!

GOSH Darling: This was THE lipstick when I initially started blogging. It's a creamy pale pink nude and on paper sounds quite nice. I never bought it at it's peak of blog popularity but got my hands on it sometime last year. However in true blog hype style it's not quite right for my skin tone, and I think it looks a touch corpse like on me!

GOSH Holographic Nail Polish: Another cult product from GOSH back in the day was the Holographic nail polish. This reached new heights of hype unseen by UK drugstore products. At one point was going for crazy amounts on eBay. Since then a lot of brands have cottoned on to the holographic nail polish, but I think this was one of the first you could buy on the UK highstreet. It was one of those polishes everyone wanted but could never get until I got my mitt's on it recently and did a little happy dance of smugness.

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish: This was something that was ALWAYS talked about back in the day but has since died down. Or maybe I just don't see much talk about it.  This was actually one of my favourite cleansers for a long long time and I repurchased it to no end. For the purpose of this post, I went out and bought another of these so decided to give it another whirl. It's a lovely creamy makeup remover which leaves the skin clean, fresh and makeup free. It removes makeup with ease and the muslin cloth that comes with it is great for exfoliation. It's worth noting Liz Earle used to send out tons of this stuff to bloggers so that could be why it was talked about so much. But it is a legitimately good cleanser, really safe and fool proof.

Eyeko: Back when Eyeko was a cutesy Japanese inspired brand, Eyeko used to be a very "blogger friendly" brand. They had blogger programmes and would often supply bloggers with items to review. Now I have a feeling this might be part of the reason they aren't talked about much. But they also went through a HUGE rebrand a few years ago. Since then they've fallen off the blogging radar, and I never really see their products talked about anymore. It's a shame as I do genuinely really love  their Skinny Eyeliner. I think this one is more of a mix of dissociated themselves with the blogosphere and rebranding to a high end for reasons I don't quite understand. It's such a big jump to go from a very cute little brand to exclusively selling eye products around the £10+ mark. It seems to have come back into bloggers view recently thanks to the Alexa Chung collab, but... I dunno. I think Im over the brand.

Chanel Bronze Universal: I still cant call it Chanel Soliel Tan De Chanel or whatever the newer fancy name for this is! I've pulled this out of my collection again recently as I've been having colour problems with my foundation. I like to use it blended on top of my foundation to add warmth and shape. It's an excellent all year round bronzer, and I wonder why I don't reach for it more often! Defintely popping it in my everyday makeup drawer for a bit!
Can you think of any other products that were previously hyped in the blogging community? I'd love to see your thoughts on the products now and way back when. If you do the tag remember to tweet me or leave it in the comments!

  2. This is a great idea Lily! I've been reading beauty blogs only for about a year now but I already see the "hype and forget" trend. For example Dior BB cream. :)

  10. I've heard so much about the Liz Earle cleanser, I really want to try it! The Chanel bronzer is amazing too, formula-wise, but the color is a little orange for me.

  11. I often wonder what the beauty blogosphere would look like if PR's didnt send out soooo much free stuff to bloggers- would we find out the real heroes of the beauty world?

Personally I still think Liz Earle C&P is a brilliant cleanser!
