building a skincare routine : the extras

building a skincare routine : the extras review swatch photo

Next up in Building a skincare - I’m talking about the extras. Those extra products that you might not use all the time but should have somewhere in your beauty stash. Everything from Face Masks to Face Oils... I’ve got it covered.

Makeup Remover:

A staple in any heavy makeup wearer’s arsenal. You want something that will breakdown all the stuff you put on your face in eyes, quickly and pain free. I like duo phase makeup removers as they are a little heavy duty (and easy to use) and others favour micellar waters. Whatever you do - try and avoids wipes. They aren't that great for the skin as they can be incredibly drying!

Try: L’Oreal Absolute Eye And Lip Makeup Remover, Bioderma Crealine H20, Clarins Instant Eye Makeup Remover

Face Masks:

Face masks come in various different forms depending on your specific skincare issues. I like to use a couple of different ones each week to keep my skin feeling fresh, hydrated and smooth. Masks with charcoal, clay and other impurity draw-er outers are perfect for oily and spot prone skin. They help balance the skin, reduce pore sized and eliminate blackheads. Dry and sensitive skin types might want to invest in hydrating face masks which will give the face a boost of hydration. Combination skin types could even mix and match face masks on different areas of skin that need attention. For example putting a moisture mask on the dry areas and then targeting the oilier zones with a charcoal based mask. Normal skin types might want to try a brightening and exfoliating masks - ones with lots of AHA’s and skin friendly ingredients which to help boost the complexion.

Try: Origins Out of Trouble (Spot prone), Bourgese Fango (Oily), The Body Shop Vitamin E Hydrating Mask (Dry), REN Glycolic Peel (Normal)

Anti Aging:

Anti Aging products will protect your skin from the elements and help fight the visible sights of ageing. Most effective when used from your twenties onwards and will probably be a staple in your routine from then on. Retinol and hyaluronic acid are currently being hailed as the anti-aging of the moment. But remember - products can often claim to be a fountain of youth with no real scientific back up… Just be careful on this one! If it sounds like it's too good to be true then it might be!

Try: La Roche Posay Retinol 60, The Body Shop Nutriganics Drops of Youth, Clarins Double Serum

Facial Oils:

Facial Oils have received a surge in popularity in recent years.  People have stopped being so afraid of oiling up the skin and reaping the benefits of smoother, plumper and fresher skin. Oils aren’t just for dry skin types. They can help balance troublesome skin, soothe angry looking spots and help reduce oil production in the skin. It’s really worth investing in a good facial oil - you won’t regret it. I personally don’t use a face oil as I’m very sensitive to oils, but I have on good authority from pretty much everyone I know that they work wonders!

Try: Nude ProGenius Treatment Oil (Dry), Clarins Lotus Oil (Oily/Combo), Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil (All)

Spot Treatments:

We’ve all heard that old wives tale that you should pop toothpaste on your spots… Just don’t. If you are spot prone then you might want to try anti blemish treatments that help calm angry pimples, fade redness and bring things to a head. You want something calming that isn’t too drying. Often spots need a mixture of soothing, exfoliating and hydrating to get rid of them.

Try: Aesop Control Gel, Origins Super Spot Remover, Clinique anti-blemish Solutions Spot Treatment Gel

This week I'll be talking you through building a skincare routine. Including products, building a routine and my skincare routine.

  1. I use the Avon black clay mineral mask which is supposed to be very similar to the one from Origins. I always steer clear of face oils as I have oily skin even though I know some of them will do my skin good

  4. I have never tried a facial oil but at the moment everywhere I read about it so maybe I will try one the next time I'll walk by. I'm a bit afraid of any oils on my face because I thought it will produce blemishes, but obviously not... :) And I really should try one of the spot treatment products you mentioned! xx
