making makeup work for you

review swatch photo

I read a quote recently by Sarah Lucero, Stila Lead Makeup Artist who did the Rebecca Minkoff show at NYFW saying "Know when to edit. Don’t apply something because you think you have to" and it really got me thinking. Being involved in the beauty world we’re told to prime, base, conceal, powder, highlight, contour, bronze, blush and that's just the face layer. There's so much emphasis on using this and that in this way because we’re told we have to. It’s so easy to forget that it’s all optional steps, and everyone is different. Tailoring your makeup routine to suit your personal needs is a must.

If you have dry skin, don’t powder likewise if you have oily skin it might be worth laying off the highlighter because you’re natural glow will shine through. Do you really need to tight line or because you saw a girl on youtube do it? Are your under eye circles really that bad you need to pile on the concealer? Knowing when to stop applying makeup is a skill that is acquired overtime but a really important step in applying makeup. Work out what products work best for your routine. Don’t use makeup items because you think you have to. Make your products work for you, not the other way around.

  1. True :)
My own make up routine is very low key. I have always been aware that all those extra steps are only really necessary when a big event is coming up. It's also important to know which steps are needed for what exact purpose. But that's really a matter of experience and trial and error.
    Still, good point! :)

  3. This is a great post, I completely agree with you :) It's so easy to watch these youtube makeup tutorials and think that should be your daily make-up routine, when really a more natural look is just as pretty :)

  4. THIS. I don't wear foundation, ever, because I haven't yet found one that I think looks natural enough for me - I can still have a blog if I want to though!

  7. I think I should probably start trying to cut some unnecessary things out of my routine I'm just so used to doing it, I could probably get away with not even wearing foundation!

  9. I totally agree! I used to have this idea that I had to wear eye-liner everyday, I couldn't show up in school without it. But honestly, what's the fun in that? Make-up is a sort of art and you don't create something of your own by following the rules. That's also why I like your blog, you're brave enough to experiment with colors etc.

  10. SO TRUE! You've really got me thinking about the makeup I apply and If I really need all the steps that we're told to use!

  11. Well said! I do feel like we sometimes buy into unnecessary steps, same can be said for skincare. I use to be a sales consultants dream, if they said "ah but you need this, it will make X look better", I'd jump straight on it. Great post.

  12. This is so true! Best post I've read today

  13. Completely agree. And the order in which you apply your make-up isn't a set rule either, like I always do my foundation, then my eye make-up and then finish off the rest of my face make-up and some people find that really strange!

  16. I just thought about this the other day! I used to feel like I needed to use primer while it just didn't work me, I stopped and don't miss it at all!

  17. So agree! make up is down to the individual, and you should wear as little or as much as what makes you feel confident :)

  18. So true. I was like 'why will no powders work for meeeee'? err, probably because you have dry skin and you're making yourself look like an old woman from the victorian era. Know when to stop xxx

  19. You're so right Lily. I never highlight or bronze. It looks pretty on others but I don't think I need it x

  20. Well said Lily! We've been so conditioned into thinking that every single makeup step is essential and should be employed with every application opportunity. FUCK THAT! Don't get me wrong, I looove makeup. But I just havn't got the time to do X Y and Z every morning. Simple and sleek works for me :)

  24. Good advice! I have 3 'options' when I'm making up my face. Lazy day, normal day, night out. Each one is different (obv) and is what works for me. Although I'm still perfecting :)

  29. I completely agree with you. I do my make up how I want which is totally different then the formula we are told to follow in the beauty world. I like it that way and I feel everyone should do it the way it fits them best!

  30. Very good advice. We forget that we all have our own way of doing things, and that just because it's different doesn't mean it's wrong. Freedom of makeup application!

  33. I actually do not wear bronzer nor highlighter. I honestly do not see the point in them. I've tried them out, but could never get the hang of it. This post is a great reminder to do what makes you comfortable in your own skin.

  34. Really liked this post. Something a bit different and relates to everyone I think. I'm guilty of just following the crowd on make up steps, when I do and don't need to do something (although the eye bag step is a must for me!).

  37. Do You Need a Love Spell to Get Your Ex lover Back?

My Name is Vicky Lorimer, I am From Manchester in United Kingdom.i am hear to give testimony of how i got back my husband, we got married for more than 9 years and have gotten two kids. thing were going well with us and we are always happy. until one day my husband started to behave in a way i could not understand, i was very confused by the way he treat me and the kids. later that month he did not come home again and he called me that he want a divorce, i asked him what have i done wrong to deserve this from him, all he was saying is that he want a divorce that he hate me and do not want to see me again in his life, i was mad and also frustrated do not know what to do,i was sick for more than 2 weeks because of the divorce. i love him so much he was everything to me without him my life is incomplete. i told my sister and she told me to contact a spell caster, i never believe in all this spell casting of a thing. i just want to try if something will come out of it. i contacted Dr Brave for the return of my husband to me, they told me that my husband have been taken by another woman, that she cast a spell on him that is why he hate me and also want us to divorce. then they told me that they have to cast a spell on him that will make him return to me and the kids, they casted the spell and after a week my husband called me and he told me that i should forgive him, he started to apologize on phone and said that he still love me that he did not know what happen to him that he left me. it was the spell that Dr Brave casted on him that make him to come back to me today,me and my family are now happy again today. thank you Dr Brave for what you have done for me i would have been nothing today if not for your great spell. i want you my friends who are passing through all this kind of love problem of getting back their husband, wife , or ex boyfriend and girlfriend to contact bravespellcaster@gmail.com. and you will see that your problem will be solved without any delay.
