ILLAMASQUA MATTE LIP LIQUID in exotic

Y'all know I love a matte lip. In fact, Illamasqua Androgen Pigment is still my favourite lip product of all time. It's held the peachy pink matte crown for a very VERY long time now. So when I heard that Illamasqua were adding a Matte Lip Liquid line to their innovative and unqiue range - I was very very excited. I was really intrigued to see how Illamasqua would tackle the trend. They are a gloss/lipstick hybrid, apply like a gloss and dry like a liquid. Available in three seasonal shades, Surrender (warm peach), Exotic (vivid orange) and Forbidden (sensual pink) which I think they plan to expand on in the future.

I initially loved them. The colour’s are bright, peppy and the colour finish is really pretty. I always got compliments on Surrender and how lovely it looked on. It was basically like a more liquid version of my beloved Androgen. However, the more I wore them the realisation hit me was that they are good, but not excellent. While they look nice for the first hour of wear I find they ball up a little on the lips and look very weird. Especially around the opening of the mouth (that sounds horrid, I apologise) the colour wears off quickly and looks very odd. I used the expression “bitty” to describe them if you know what I mean.

I do like them, but I don’t think they are exceptional. Like all matte liquid lipsticks, they suck all the moisture out the lips and leave you with a bit of a chalky looking pout. I love the idea, colour pay off, shade range and the packaging… It’s just not quite there in terms of finish. Nice but not the best.

  1. I was so tempted by them when I walked past my local counter - and by the advertising - oh the advertising! Glad I saved my money. :)

  7. I'm usually not a fan of bright colours, but I actually really like the bright orange-ish one, as well as the nude-y pink of course!

  8. I'm a matte lip kinda gal, and the applicator on these looks really good, but the colour range doesn't really excite me.

  10. Exotic looks so nice on you, and the finish looks great too. It's a shame you've found them falling short of excellent quality :( I like the concept but it's not enough to sway me to lipgloss hybrids

  14. I have to agree with you, I've seen lots of people raving about them but the formula is just no good, glad someone agrees!

  15. I'm always so envious of how well you suit pale peachy lip colours! My skin tone & lip pigmentation just doesn't work with them which is super annoying as they're the colours I'm most drawn to! Matte lips are definitely my favourite too, but I take the 'bitiness' with a pinch of salt as I love the finish so much! Never tried a liquid matte formula though so I may have to have a play around with these to see if they cut the mustard :) Thanks for the review Lily!

  23. These shades both really suit you Lily, it's a shame they aren't great though, but I'm glad you were honest about them. I'll consider picking up the Bourjois ones instead which are half of the price anyway!

  24. Looooooove peachy shades - Androgen is the ultimate. Have to agree though, the best liquid lipstick is Stila but even they don't look too hot hours later.
