Beauty Products to Splurge or Save on

review swatch photo

When it comes to beauty products there are a few items that I feel you should invest in and others that are perfectly fine to pick up at a more budget friendly prices. For example whenever I buy cheap tweezers they go blunt within a few uses and I have to replace them within a few months. My Tweezermans have lasted me a good few years and even have a sharpening service if they ever do go blunt. While there are a few mascaras I really like that are high end most drugstore versions do just just as good of a job. When it comes to eyeshadow it’s all down to formulation. Sometimes I like to pick budget friendly options but the majority of cheap shadows can lack pigment and staying powder. When it comes to foundation I feel like this should be something you should invest your money in. Having a flawless base to begin with is super important.

While I’m always up for mixing and matching different products from the drugstore and the beauty halls here’s my rough guide of where to invest in and where to scrimp on.

Splurge on

  • Foundation
  • Makeup Brushes
  • Eyeshadows
  • Tweezers
  • Lash Curlers

Save on

  • Nail Polish
  • Lipstick
  • Eyeliner
  • Mascara
  • Setting Powders

  1. i do splurge on lipsticks a lot because drug stores are just not great where i live and they don't carry any nice brands but i would never splurge on a mascara. the maybelline ones are amazing and the price is on point.

  5. I splurged on lipsticks and I'm not even sorry. I'd also splurge on a really good tinted moisturiser like the NARS one. I've bought it and not looked back ever since.

  6. I splurge on lipstick because I'm completely obsessed with them (although that's not to say cheaper lipsticks aren't good!) but I agree with saving on Mascara and Eyeliner….some of my favourite eyeliners are from Collection!

  7. I definitely splurge on lipsticks! I could have a MAC lipstick and a Rimmel lipstick in the exact same colour and always go for the MAC, there's just something nicer and fulfilling about having more expensive products I think :-) Definitely agree with you on the mascara though!

  9. I agree to splurge on foundation, but I'd still splurge on lipsticks too. I have quite dry lips and find many brands quite drying so I'm happy to splurge on the good ones! xxx Thou Shalt Not Covet

  13. Definitely splurge on foundation, eyeshadow, Bronzer and contour products, some lipsticks and then save on mascara, nails, lipsticks and even brow products. I shop to maxx a lot so you get fab deals. Also I don't scrimp on skincare - has to work !

  18. I agree about mascara, nail varnish, eyeliner and setting powder but I can't find a lipstick range that compares to MAC in colour range and formula! I also think that Real Techniques brushes are great.

  25. As you said I think a good base is important! I only got high end foundation, but for concealer I really like the maybelline ones! And even tho there's lot of nice drugstore eyes palette I kind of prefer urban decay palettes. But I love bourgeois lipstick, sephora & mavala nails polishes and sephora brushes! xx

  26. I agree with everything but I'd say splurge on eyeliner - otherwise you will be reapplying all day!

  27. I find that Collection [2000] are one of those mega-affordable brands that just seem to have a great version of everything, so they'd have me set if I was ever on a very tight budget!

Actually prefer my low-end mascaras and liner (from aforementioned brand) but always splurge on MAC blushes (best pigmentation and shade range) as well as MAC lipsticks (favourite classic shades I can't live without). And Urban Decay eyeshadows!

  30. I agree about saving on mascara and nail polishes - there are definitely some great ones available at the drugstore price. I say splurge on concealer as well, I have yet to find a good drugstore one that works as well as any of the higher end concealers that I own.

  34. I generally splurge on the essentials i'll wear everyday - so foundation, brow pencil, mascara. Then everything else (bar the occasional lipstick) i'll save on!

  35. This is a great post but I would have to disagree on mascara and lipsticks! I love my YSL and Tom Ford lippies and I haven't found a drugstore mascara that works better for me than YSL Babydoll. I agree on the foundation though, since its right on bare skin it needs to be higher quality.
    I really enjoy your blog!!

  37. I'm yet to splurge on foundation because I'm terrified that I won't like it, although for something that I use pretty much every day it makes sense to spend a bit more for the extra quality! I also absolutely love the Miss Manga mascara you've pictured here, possibly my favourite high street mascara ever? x

  38. How to restore a broken relationship and marriage

My name is Wendy Streeter from the United States of America and am here to share a testimony i would please want you to read careful. I was married for seventeen years until misfortune came in. My husband and i were living happily with our children and enjoyed the company of each other. Our eldest daughter eloped with her boyfriend and this cost my husband his job because he could no longer concentrate on his job and this almost tore our home apart. My husband lost his job and we were living on the little income i was making from my cabbage. This really tormented our home cos my husband loves her more than our other kids. I tried all i could do to make my husband happy even when i wasn't happy. This happened for sometime and he had cardiac arrest. We spent virtually all the money we had and still the condition did not improve. I was left with no choice than to sell the stuffs in our house, I was able to realise some money which was spent on his medical bills. I did this for a while until we had no money on us again. We came home and was hoping he could get better. He continued like that for some months and we decided to seek for solution else where. I went online where i met many self acclaimed doctors and spell casters but none could help. I then came across this particular caster whose testimonies i have read. His name is Dr.Brave he promised to help and he did in a way i find very surprising to explain. He told me that he would cast some spells to make my daughter come back and to get my husband his job back. It was like an impossible task. But with the help and intervention of this prophet of GOD, my daughter came back home and saw her dad was sick and she cried and asked for forgiveness. My husband after a week became whole again and another spell was cast to get him his job back. Like a dream it happened. My daughter is back home and my loving husband is well again and now has his job back. So good people of the world i want you to help me in saying a big thank you to Dr.Brave for his intervention. This is one Dr i will seriously recommend for anyone with issues of such nature or any other problem. Simply contact him on his email via bravespellcaster@gmail.com,or kindly visit he website http://bravespellcaster.yolasite.com .

  39. I pretty much agree with that list although most things I would go to the drugstore with because I'm more into saving my money. I personally don't wear foundation (just concealer) and I don't fill my eyebrows in and I don't wear eyeliner so that really reduces the money I spend already! The things I would splurge on is eyeshadows and lipsticks, and lipsticks, not because the formula is necessarily better but the packaging is SO much nicer. :)

  40. I agree that you should splurge on eyeshadow. Most drugstore shadows lack pigmentation, and are very chalky and hard to work with. Its probably the item I splurge on most, because high end shadows are sososo much better. Also, I agree that drugstore mascaras work just as well, if not better than high end mascaras! xoxo
