Knowing if you're ready for a big chop

do i cut my hair short
I went for the big chop last year - going from below the boob long flowing locks to The Lob. I think at the time I just needed a change (admittedly, post breakup hair change hollaaaa). Flash forward almost a year later and Im pining for my longer locks. Do I regret the chop? Not at all. My hair needed it at the time but I’m always asked about if I regret the drastic hair change!

Think about it

Chopping your hair off is a major decision. I dwelled on cutting mine for about a week before settling on doing it. If your worried about it then sleep on it and then sleep on it again until you are 100% sure. Don’t let stress or peer pressure prompt you. And if you’re going for the post breakup hair change… maybe wait a week or two to make sure it's right!

Consultations

Most hairdressers offer a consultation for free. Make sure you bring in enough photographs of what you do and do want (see this post on how to avoid a bad haircut) and state exactly what you want and expect. Your hair dresser isn’t a mind reader so try and be as clear as you can be. Always
ask your stylists opinion too, they are the professional after all.

Try & Try again

Maybe go into a wig shop and ask if you can try on a few different styles to get a feel for how it might look on you. There are also tons of online makeover tools which might be worth testing out of you’re still unsure. It’s probably a good idea to test out what it might look on you before making a huge commitment!

  1. I've always struggled with being happy with my hair. I have made so many rash decisions and cut off my lovely long longs into a short bob with spikey hair. Worst time of my life! I always get bored of my colours easily and struggle to find a hair cut that suits me.

I have finally became happy with my hair colour and my inverted bob. It shapes my face nicely and never gets in the way. I would definitely think before making any changes.

  3. I always agree about thinking it over - like with beauty or a gift, if you leave and still want it, then you have to go for it! I've been keeping mine short so I can grow the bleach out quicker, looking forward to natural hair again!

  5. For a long time I would go to the hairdressers and just get half an inch off, and then one day I realised that whether I liked it or not, I had to go for a drastic chop! I needed to change things up a bit but I also just had to lose 5 inches of straggly dead ends. I think a shorter, healthier style is almost always better than holding onto long, dry, untameable locks!

Your hair looks great long or short but I think the long bob works particularly well with your style.x

  6. I always have millions of pictures in my phone when I go to the hairdresser! And most of them are always yours! You made me to do the big chop last winter and I have never been happier with my hair! I can say without doubts that you are my fave hair inspiration Lilly!:)

  7. Sadly, I got the post break up haircut. Worst decision I ever made, I went from boob length long locks to a short bob that was just above my jaw. Never again!

Your hair looks lovely and I think it really does suit you.

  8. For a while I was contemplating getting my hair chopped off and not wearing hair extensions, but after a long deliberation I decided against it. I'm glad I did because I can barely spend a day without extensions x

  9. I personally think you look very chic with your lob. :)

  10. Your new style looks so lovely :) short hair doesn't suit me (I'm tall and kind of boy-shaped, so I look quite masculine with it, and not in a cute way) - I'm just growing it out & seeing how long it can get before I don't like it anymore! I always recommend Pinterest for gathering hair ideas before a salon appointment - makes it very easy for the hairdresser to know the exact style you're going for and improves the chance of a style you'll love.

  12. Oh man.. I'm pining for shorter hair, but I'm so desperate to get it nice and long after "accidentally" chopping it short two years ago. Almost at my desired length and then I'll ponder the "lob" afterwards!

  13. In September I went from below the boob length hair to just below the shoulders and it was the best thing I've ever done. Thankfully, it suits me! It looks so much healthier, has more body and volume and I just feel like I look smart all the time - hooray for the big chop! :D xx

  14. I love your short hair! I thought about cutting my hair to shoulder length for a while but because it is so so thick and relatively curly, I'm not sure if it would look right. I would probably end up with a giant mop head!

  15. How weird, you've uploaded this post just after I've come back from the hairdressers. My hair feels so much healthier after a hair cut :) x

  16. I think in your 20s you no longer crave the long mermaid hair. Shorter styles are so much more fun!

  20. I love the idea of trying on wigs to see what suits you! My hair is getting a bit on the long side, but I get so nervous at the thought of chopping it all off!

  21. I really want to go for the chop but I'm worried I'll regret it. I think I'm going to give myself a bit longer with my long hair to make the most of styling it :)

  22. I've been having long hair (those that grow until the length of your waist) for a few years now because I've never gotten the chance to have long hair when I was in school, but now I'm thinking of getting a chop and I hope it'll turn out fine! :)

  23. I chopped my waist length hair off bit by bit over the last year, I feel it looks so much healthier and doesn't drag my face down! I love your hair short though, so pleeease never grow it back long! haha

  24. I chopped my hair off in September and now it definitely needs chopping again! That's the problem with the lob. It grows out into the awkward lob length..

  25. Aaah the post-breakup-chop-then-kind-of-regret-later. I know it well. Luckily my hair grows fast and my lovelife isn't as disastrous as it once was. I think you look great with both long and short though. x

  26. It's four years now since I chopped off my boob length hair to shoulder length. I'd had hair that length, sometimes longer, for about 12 years, but I knew it was the right thing to do because I went through a crisis of image after being made redundant and it started driving me crazy. One day I was so fed up of it I would have cut it off if I could have found any scissors in my boyfriends house. I do miss long hair occasionally, but I don't regret it at all x
