Gosh Velvet Touch Lip Liner in Nougat Crisp

If 2013 was the year of the eyebrows, 2013 was the year of the lip liners. Lets just call it the Kylie Jenner effect. Her enlarged matte pout has been put down to her overlining her lips, with tons of us trying to recreate her signature look. I've been scouting around for more affordable versions of her lip colour (rumoured to be MAC Whirl, seriously hard to get hold of!) First I have the Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner in East End Snob. A super creamy easy to use lip liner which is much pinker than I anticipated. It's a pretty good dupe for Charlotte Tilburys Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk. Great for enhancing the natural shape of your lips without it looking too overdone. Secondly I tried the Gosh Velvet Touch Lip Liner in Nougat Crisp. This one was much more neutral and browner in tone and a near match for my natural lip colour. This made it the ideal shade to enlarge my own lip shape. I also really loved how long lasting this shade was, it lasted a good 5 hours and thats while I was eating and drinking!

If you want the KJ lip look then I'd go for the Gosh one but if you're looking for a really easy to use and versatile one then I'd try the Rimmel one. Both come in at under a fiver so are pretty affordable for beginners just getting into lip liner!

rainbow glitter nails

lily allen rainbow nails rainbow glitter nail polish rainbow nail lily allen elegant touch everythings alright rainbow nails review swatch photo

I popped into Superdrug a few days ago to pick up some basics and ended up leaving with an armful of new bits and bobs. One thing that caught my eye were these insane Lily Allen x Elegant Touch nails in Everthing's Just Wonderful. They are a super insane rainbow glitter print and are super eye-catching.

The only thing I didnt dig was the shape, a lot of the Elegant Touch Lily Loves nails are sqoval or stiletto style nails. I know that Lily herself tends to opt towards these shapes so it makes sense the range would be that shape, but it's just not my personal cup of tea. All I did was file them down so they were a little shorter and squarer.

While I do think they are crazy over the top they are so fun and perfect for the party season. I wore these for a few days and had so many compliments (and some looks of horror from my neutral nail polish lovin' mates!) on them.

Simple Winter Bronzing Guide

how to apply bronzer in winter
how to apply bronzer in winter how to apply bronzer in winter
While those easy breezy summer days feel like a distant memory, faux-ing that warm glow is pretty easy. The changing of the seasons doesn’t mean you have to adopt the pale and interesting look if you prefer the bronzed up babe look. Brighten up even the most pasty winter skin with three steps to creating a radiant winter glow. For that fresh of the alps kinda look.

Step One: Mimic a warmer look to the skin by using a bronzing primer. It’ll add little glow inducing boost before foundation. I like the Clarins Bronzing Primer - it helps keep makeup in place all day and adds subtle warmth to the skin.

Step Two: For bronzer you should stick to something matte for a more natural finish. . A cream bronzer is a moisturising option during the winter months as cream is more flattering on drier skin. Chanel Bronze Universal (yeap, still cant call it Chanel Soliel Tan De Chanel) or the more budget friendly option of the Seventeen Contour Cream. This way you have a nice natural dewy finish that doesnt look powdery.

Step Three: Contour the face by sweeping the product up towards the ear and blending. Blending is key here, use a large fluffy brush such as the Real Techniques Blush brush to blur out all the harsh edges keeping it looking soft and natural.

Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Noble is a newbie to my lip colour lineup and has firmly made a mark in my go-to lipstick section. A pretty matte petal pink nude which brightens the skin and lifts the face. As a girl firmly in the peachy pink camp I've found this replacing my favourite lip shade ever (Illamasqua Androgen Pigment, obvz) which surprises me! For a matte it's not very drying, in fact it's one of the smoothest matte lipsticks I've tried for a while! Super vibrant, pigmented and super long lasting. Big thumbs up from me!

ANASTASIA contour kit

Ever look at something and just decide there and then you need this in your life no questions asked? Yeap that was me when I saw that the Anastasia Contour Kit had come back into stock on Cult Beauty. Before I knew it the palette was on its way to me and in my grubby paws.

Iconic brow brand Anastasia launched one of the most covetable face palettes of the year. A selection of 6 different shades designed to perfectly contour and shape the face. With a mix of both sateen and matte textures this palette is not one to skip on if you’re into your contouring. All of the shades are neutral in tone which means they work on a variety of skin tones to create dreamy model like cheekbones.

This palette has caused a bit of a frenzy among those in the beauty know and it comes in and out of stock all the time. It’s currently in stock and Cult Beauty also have a £5 off when you spend £45. I’d recommend picking this up and the Anastasia Brow Whiz while you’re at it!

3 step no makeup makeup base

3 step no makeup makeup base

laura mercier silk cream foundation
tarte the sculptor
becca shimmering skin perfector

I've been reaching for three products on No makeup makeup days to give myself a natural but flawless base. To prep the skin I applied the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector onto bare skin to give a fresh, dewy feel to the skin. Then on top apply my foundation of choice the Laura Mercier Silk Creme. This is medium to full coverage, but very build-able so I often use a tiny tiny amount and buff buff buff for good coverage with minimal product. Now to sculpt the face - I've been reaching for my Tarte The Sculptor, this is a creamy chubby pencil which can be used to contour and shape the face. I adore this and have been using it pretty much daily since I purchased it. It works by giving the perfect shadow and shape to the face and it's creamy formula is super blend-able and looks so natural.

Topshop More Than a Woman Lip Bullet*

The shade on pretty much everyone in the beauty worlds lips right now is Charlotte Tilbury Glastonberry. Part of a drop of 12 amazing matte revolution lipsticks, it's the shade to be seen in this winter. Unfortunately at £23 a pop they arent in everyones price bracket. While I'm on a Glastonberry hype right now I've been on the hunt for a more affordable alternative for those wanting the look for less. In comes Topshop More Than a Woman.

A super pigmented creamy dark purple, which is slightly more purple in tone than Charlotte's offering. While not as matte or long lasting as the high end counterpart it definitely looks similar and costs a fraction of the price. Totally worth a swatch if you're near a Topshop beauty counter!

cult beauty blogger lip balm

nuxe reve de miel review swatch photo

nuxe reve de miel*

Now I've tried a hell of a lot of lip balms over my time as a beauty blogger. One keeps cropping up on pretty much anyone in the know's lists of HG lip products is the iconic Nuxe Reve De Miel. An ultra nnourishinglip balm packed full of money and precious oils to hydrated, smooth and protect the lips. The texture is totallly unique, I've never tried a balm quite like it. It's a strange almost gritty feel to it which leaves a matte finish on the lips. Once applied it lasts for 4-5 hours without budging or fading away, with no signs of drying the lips out. It's a beauty blogger cult product for a reason. Defintely worth the hype IMO!

Suprising Winter Primers

review swatch photo

clarins instant smooth self tanner
becca shimmering skin perfector

In the market for a winter primer? Here are two not so obvious picks to perk up winter battered skin that I've been reaching for as of late. The Clarins Instant Smooth Self Tanning Primer is a one step prime, perfect and bronze. It leaves the skin looking flawless, smoothed out and ready for makeup all while adding a subtle sheen of colour. Shimmery primers aren't just for summer! They work excellently at perking up tired looking skin and giving a soft glowing base. The Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector is a newbie to my makeup line up but so far I've been loving it. It's a It peps up even the most dull and lifeless skintones to give a stunning glowy look. It's not glittery, just shimmery and used under foundation it creates the perfect lit from within glow.

If you've been living under the rock and dont know what these two products do then you really need to get with the times. One step nail polishes have been released in their masses this year and have been a staple of any self confessed beauty junkies beauty arsenal.

Each pot contails a nail polish remover soaked foam pad with a hole in the top to insert your finger. Super easy to use because all you do is pop your finger in, twist and press and off comes all the nail polish. Literally a few seconds and it's gone. Ideal if you change your nails a lot, Plus you dont have to remember to buy cotton pads!

my new favourite eyeliner

Burberry Effortless Liquid liner review swatch photo
Burberry Effortless Liquid liner review swatch photo
burberry effortless liquid eyeliner in jet black *

The Burberry Effortless Liquid liner came into my possession a few weeks ago and I'm well and truely hooked. Bored of my old favourite the Guerlain Eyeliner and in desperate need of a switch up I reached for it and haven't looked back. Super black, easy to use and absolutely fool proof. Providing the perfect swoop of liner to frame the eyes and pull my whole look together. Totally lives up to the effortless name! An ultra fine nip which glides onto the lid for the perfect feline flick.

At £23 it's not the cheapest of products but gosh darn it, it's awesome.

the do's and donts of lip liner

OCC Lip Pencil in Black Dahlia review swatch photo
OCC Lip Pencil in Black Dahlia review swatch photo

Lip Liner is a product that I’ve never really got. I just never really understood how or why I needed to use it. I recently picked up the OCC Lip Pencil in Black Dahlia and I finally understood the joys of a lip liner. The OCC Lip Liner is creamy and easy to use with minimal fading as a base. Crazy long wearing, it defines and shapes my lips and locks in colour. Perf.

Lip liner seems to have a resurgence in popularity recently. Maybe because of the rise of the Kylie Jenner Lip. While girl aint fooling anyone with her lip fillers everyone is trying to create that super full look. Here are some of the things I’ve learnt since dabbling in the stuff:

DO use a natural shade around the edges of the lips for a fuller look to the lips.

DONT use lip liner without a product on top. Often lip pencils are designed to be chalkier and more matte. Try using a balm or a light gloss over it to keep it looking fresh and hydrated.

DO use lip liner to define the lips. The cupids bow especially.

DONT over line your lips to the point it looks fake. While it somehow works for Kylie Jenner us mere mortals don’t seem to have much luck. Keep it looking natural but boosted.

DO line the lips when using a bright lip colour. It’ll make it last longer and look cleaner around the edges.

Knowing if you're ready for a big chop

do i cut my hair short
I went for the big chop last year - going from below the boob long flowing locks to The Lob. I think at the time I just needed a change (admittedly, post breakup hair change hollaaaa). Flash forward almost a year later and Im pining for my longer locks. Do I regret the chop? Not at all. My hair needed it at the time but I’m always asked about if I regret the drastic hair change!

Think about it

Chopping your hair off is a major decision. I dwelled on cutting mine for about a week before settling on doing it. If your worried about it then sleep on it and then sleep on it again until you are 100% sure. Don’t let stress or peer pressure prompt you. And if you’re going for the post breakup hair change… maybe wait a week or two to make sure it's right!

Consultations

Most hairdressers offer a consultation for free. Make sure you bring in enough photographs of what you do and do want (see this post on how to avoid a bad haircut) and state exactly what you want and expect. Your hair dresser isn’t a mind reader so try and be as clear as you can be. Always
ask your stylists opinion too, they are the professional after all.

Try & Try again

Maybe go into a wig shop and ask if you can try on a few different styles to get a feel for how it might look on you. There are also tons of online makeover tools which might be worth testing out of you’re still unsure. It’s probably a good idea to test out what it might look on you before making a huge commitment!

4 Tools Every Beauty Blogger Needs

4 Tools Every Beauty Blogger Needs

Nail Polish Remover : I’d be lost without the Bourjois Magic Nail Polish Remover. A literal twist and remove tub of goodness. Less mess than using cotton balls and makeup remover too! Perfect for swatching colours on your nails as it cuts down removal time considerably.

Wipes: For removing swatches, because if you’re anything like me you’ll end up looking like some crazy lipstick tiger lady with lines all up your arms! Any ol’ ones will do - even baby wipes!

Nail Swatch Wheels: I use these for two things. To help me find dupes of shades that I might already have in my collection or to swatch nail polishes on when I don’t have time to paint my nails over and over again.

Blu Tack: I often reach for the blue stuff when I need to secure something to the surface I’m shooting on. No one can see it and no one will ever know you actually placed everything down with some Blu Tack! Stops things from rolling around and you don’t have to worry about things moving during shooting.

nail polish remover on the go

nail polish remover on the go review swatch photo
CVS NAIL POLISH REMOVER WIPES

Nails tend to chip at the worst of times. While keeping a spare polish in your bag is pretty easy to do, nail polish remover is another story. It's not exactly purse friendly in the slightest. A nail polish remover and prepper in one. As the packets are small and individually wrapped you can take them in your bag with you. While I wouldn’t recommend doing all your nails with these, keeping one in your purse for mani emergencies is a must!!

4 handbag must haves

review swatch photo

I don’t often take beauty bits out with me when I do things. I very rarely touch up my makeup beyond a dab of powder once I leave the house so I tend to keep my beauty bits to a minimum. None the less there are 4 products I keep on hand at all times for those times when I need a jujj, refresh and a bit of TLC.

Compeed Plasters
For the times that you fabulous new shoes are just that little bit too tight for you. I’ve been caught out way too many times over LFW so keeping a pack of plasters within easy reach is a must. These Compeed ones provide instant pain relief by creating a protective cushion between the shoe and your heel.

Bumble & Bumble Dryspun Finish
A travel sized can of my favourite texture spray is perfect for giving my hair that extra oomph it needs throughout the day. One blast of this into my roots and a good ruffle later my hair is boosted and big.

Laura Mercier Mineral Powder Compact On shine control duty I have my favourite powder. Great for touch up’s on the go as it adds a little bit of coverage while dulling any shine down.

Viva La Juicy Rollerball Perfume
Rollerball perfume is a new addition to my beauty bag and I’m loving them. Slimline and perfect for popping into bags of all sizes. Viva La Juicy is bright, uplifting and girly and one of my favourite scents.

YSL Black Opium

YSL Black Opium review swatch photo

YSL Black Opium does not smell anything like I imagined it would. The packaging suggests something a little darker, masculine and a little musky. But I found the scent to be a little bit sweet with a heavy vanilla undertone. It takes me back to the 90’s and the rich sweetness of Impulse Vanilla kisses with a modern edge.

Black Opium is girlier and sweet with a sexy floriental opening which dries down to a darker coffee aroma. It's simple, but punchy and unapologetic but also incredibly sweet. In fact the scent reminds me of a Vanilla Latte... Creamy, tart with a little rawness.

I actually adore the scent and I think this is going to be a popular offering from YSL but the branding on this one confuses me. I don’t really understand where they have got the whole Rock N Roll theme from when the perfume itself screams girly girl. You could have slapped it in a pink bottle and it probably made more sense. Not quite Rockstar edginess, but a must spritz all the same!

Winter Foundation Switcharoo

review swatch photo

Time to tuck away all the summer bases for another year and move onto a winter foundation lineup. Your skin texture is probably changing due to the crisp fall air and it’s time to change with the seasons. Updating your foundation for the cooler months is a must, this way you can transitional seamlessly into a more suitable base.

Here is a little edit of my favourite winter proof foundations!

Jouer Matte Moisture Tint SPF 15

A staple in my lazy girl routine is this super lightweight foundation. It provides enough coverage for day to day wear with a soft moisture infused finish. I like to use this blended into the skin with my fingers. This one is more suitable for oilier skin types as it may dry out drier ones, it does come in a more dry skin friendly version for oiler skin gals.

MAC Cosmetics Face & Body Foundation

You’ll have definitely seen this in pretty much every makeup artists kit. A cult status product for anyone in the know. With a crazy amount of shades there is something to suit everyone. perfect for dry or oily skin types with great adaptable coverage from light to medium. Theres a reason why this is so popular!

Clarins Hydra Quench Tinted Moisturiser

Another tinted moisturiser but this one is more suited for the drier skin types. This one doesn’t offer too much coverage but it does leave the skin looking fresh, luminous and glowy. Think natural, radiant and healthy.
